EASLEY — The night of June 14 was the Republican primary in South Carolina and Rep. Neal Collins hosted the community and candidates to follow the returns with an eye on creating unity within Pickens County.
It turns out Collins’ idea — Election Night Unity Party — benefited more than just those interested in politics as proceeds generated at Groucho’s Deli in Easley will go toward helping children excel at reading.
Camp iRock was the beneficiary of the fundraiser receiving a check for $150. The funds will be used to purchase books for campers.
Camp iRock is a combined effort between the state, the School District of Pickens County, YMCA, and United Way and has become a model for the state at large for summer educational programs and/or camps.
The Election Night Unity Party drew voters and candidates, including Chris Bowers, Rep. Gary Clary, Rep. Neal Collins, Roy Costner, Wes Hendricks, Robert Sams, and Harley Staton.
Clary ran unopposed and Collins got the nod for a second term. Costner and Hendricks would have to go to a runoff June 28 but would claim seats on Pickens County Council.
A check presentation was held June 30 with Sid Collins of the Pickens YMCA, Julie Capaldi of the United Way, Nick Taaffe of Groucho’s Deli, SDPC superintendent Dr. Danny Merck, and Rep. Neal Collins in attendance.
