The Ron Webber Fund for Homeless and Impoverished Children
In early 2012, the United Way of Pickens County Community Basic Services (CBS) Council discussed additional ways that UWPC could address homelessness in Pickens County. Ron Webber, the Coordinator for Career and Secondary Education with the School District of Pickens County, commented that there were 1,233 homeless students in Pickens County and that the School District Social Workers (now called Family Liaisons) provide these children with support and assistance but had a shortage of funding to help them.
After receiving a detailed list of items needed by the children, Council members Joyce Klein and Bob Fennell sent out a request for in-kind donations to the congregations who belong to Clemson Area Congregations in Touch (CACIT) in April, 2012. United Way was designated as the drop-off point for these donations.
Over time, as the in-kind donations grew and began to include monetary donations, a management plan became necessary. United Way of Pickens County offered to administer the collection and distribution of in-kind as well as cash donations. The United Way Board of Directors voted to officially establish and administer a School District Social Worker Fund to support the social workers in their efforts to help children.
When Ron Webber tragically passed away in November of 2013, the CBS Council suggested that the name of the Fund be changed in his memory. In March 2014, the Fund officially became the Ron Webber Fund for Homeless and Impoverished Children.
